Mumbai’s much-anticipated Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, is nearing completion and is likely to be inaugurated before the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. The 33.5 km-long underground corridor, dotted with 27 key stations, will revolutionize the city's public transport system by offering faster connectivity and easing traffic congestion.
Phase One Launch and Inauguration Plans
The first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 3 is expected to cover a 12 km stretch, connecting Aarey Colony to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) with 10 stations. This section is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon after the 10-day Ganesh festival and before the implementation of the model code of conduct for the assembly polls. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has invited the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) to inspect the rakes, and another application for inspecting the tracks will be submitted next week.
Once operational, this new metro line will significantly reduce travel time between key employment hubs such as SEEPZ, Bandra Kurla Complex, and Andheri. It will also connect the international and domestic airport terminals, making it a highly efficient mode of transport for both daily commuters and business travelers.
Metro Line 3 Features and Connectivity
The Aqua Line is unique in Maharashtra, as 26 of its 27 stations are underground, with only one at grade level. The entire corridor spans from Colaba to SEEPZ, covering major employment and commercial centers like Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade, Fort, and Lower Parel. In phase one, the metro will connect with existing Mumbai Metro Line 1 at Marol Naka, providing seamless transfers to other metro lines and railway stations such as Andheri and Ghatkopar.
Each train will carry up to 2,500 passengers, with the ability to transport 42,000 passengers per hour in each direction. The frequency of the service is expected to be between 3-4 minutes, ensuring quick and efficient travel across the city.
Project Status and Future Plans
The construction of Mumbai Metro Line 3, which started in October 2016, is 98% complete. The project, with a revised cost of ₹37,275.50 crore, has received significant funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has provided 57.09% of the total amount.
While the final phase of the project is expected to be completed by December 2024, the MMRC is keen to start operations on the first phase this month, once the CMRS certifies the safety and functionality of the rolling stock and tracks.

A Game Changer for Mumbai’s Transport
Once fully operational, Mumbai Metro Line 3 will not only offer faster commutes but also ease pressure on the city’s overcrowded roads and suburban railway system. With its extensive underground network and connectivity to key commercial zones, it is set to become a preferred mode of transport for thousands of Mumbaikars.
This new addition to the city’s transport network marks a significant step towards creating a more efficient and modern urban mobility system for one of India's busiest metropolitan areas.
